Health classes explained

The meanings behind Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard—and what changes your class.

Insurers use rate classes to price. Terms shift by company, but the order's the same: Preferred Plus (Super Preferred or Preferred Best elsewhere), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, then ratings for above-standard risk. Smokers get a separate tier at higher costs.

What underwriters look at

Factors: body size, BP, cholesterol, heart/cancer in the family under 60, driving history, meds, job, hobbies, tobacco. Top tier wants clean scores almost everywhere; Preferred eases up; Standard Plus and Standard accept managed issues like controlled blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

The health prompt asks for honesty: Excellent → Preferred Plus, Very good → Preferred, Good → Standard Plus, Average → Standard. Quotes follow your pick; underwriting confirms the final class. Not sure? Quote two and compare. A rosy guess won't cut your price—just makes the estimate wrong.

Susman Insurance Agency can match you with insurers whose rules fit your condition better—often more relevant than the advertised price.
